New Storm Could Bring More Peril to California Rivers Already Hit by Deadly Flooding

A powerful storm barreling toward California from the tropical Pacific threatens to trigger widespread river flooding throughout the state as warm rain melts a record accumulation of snowpack and sends runoff surging down mountains and into streams and reservoirs.

Although state officials insist they are prepared to manage runoff from what is now the 10th atmospheric river of a deadly rainy season, at least one expert described the combination of warm rain, epic snowpack and moist soils as “bad news.”

Despite Recent Parade of Storms, California Unveils Drought Resiliency Task Force

Though the recent barrage of winter storms has certainly improved California’s drought conditions, state water leaders are making moves to prepare for the inevitable dry season soon to come.

On Friday, the California Department of Water Resources kickstarted a partnership between state agencies, local governments, scientists and community members in a new task force, called the Drought Resilience Interagency and Partners Collaborative.

North County Area Deals With Water Restrictions Amid Drought

California’s drought conditions are prompting actions geared toward conserving water in northern San Diego County.

The Vallecitos Water District, which serves the northeastern region of the county, already activated its level two water conservation plans. It comes following Gov. Gavin Newsom’s executive order in April, which calls on water suppliers to prepare for a shortage of up to 20%.

Proposal for Huntington Beach Desalination Plant to Receive Final Vote Thursday

Poseidon Water, the company that runs the seawater desalination facility in Carlsbad, is pushing to build another desalination plant in Huntington Beach.

“We developed the project in Carlsbad and have been operating that facility since we came online in 2015. In that time, we have produced almost 90 billion gallons of fresh water for San Diego County residents,” said Jessica Jones, director of communications for Poseidon Water.
